How to Build Your Own Custom AI Tool
How to Build a Custom Research Tool in Kuration AI
Custom Tools let you define your own AI-powered research columns using your own prompts, outcome criteria, and source instructions. Once created, they're saved to your Toolbox and can be reused across any table.
Getting Started
Step 1: Open the Toolbox
Click the Toolbox button in the top toolbar to open the tools and features panel.

Step 2: Navigate to Custom Tools
Inside the Toolbox, click Custom Tools to view any tools you've already created and to access the option to create a new one.
Step 3: Create a New Custom Tool
Click Create Custom Tool to open the tool builder.

Step 4: Write Your Prompt & Instructions
In the prompt field, describe what you want the AI to research or evaluate. Use the @ symbol to tag specific columns from your table — this tells the tool which data to reference when running.
Example: "Based on @Company Name and @Website, determine whether this company sells directly to enterprise clients."

Step 5: Define the Outcome
In the Outcome field, specify what a successful research result looks like. Be as precise as possible — this guides the AI on how to format and present its findings.
Example: "Yes or No, followed by a one-sentence explanation."
Step 6: Set a Default Response
Enter a fallback value in the Default Response field. This is what the tool returns when it cannot find relevant information for a given row.
Example: "Not enough information available."
Step 7: Add Source Instructions
In the Source Instructions field, tell the AI where and how to look for information — for example, whether to check the company website, LinkedIn, news sources, or other signals.
Example: "Check the company's website homepage and About page. Look for any mention of enterprise plans, case studies, or Fortune 500 clients."
Finalising Your Tool
Step 8: Create the Column
Click Create Column to add your Custom Tool as a new column in your table. The tool will begin running automatically across your rows.
Step 9: Access Your Saved Tool Anytime
Your Custom Tool is automatically saved to the Toolbox. Click the Toolbox icon at any time, then go to the Custom Tools tab to find it. If it doesn't appear immediately, click Load More Custom Tools — your most recently created tool will appear at the end of the list.
Step 10: Edit & Update
You can revisit and modify any Custom Tool at any time from the Custom Tools tab. Changes take effect the next time the tool runs.

Tips
- Be specific in your prompt. The more context you give, the more accurate and consistent your results will be.
- Use @ column tags to make your tool dynamic — it will pull the right data for each row automatically.
- Set a clear default response so your table stays clean and readable even when data is missing.
- Test on a small batch first before running your tool across a large table.
