Lesson 8 of 8

Lesson 2.4.8

Build a list from who engaged with a post

7 min read7 min videoIntermediate

What this costs

Charged per profile returned. A post with two hundred reactions produces roughly two hundred rows.

Before you start

A connected LinkedIn account, and a post URL worth mining.

Everything else in this course finds companies by what they are. This finds people by what they just did. Somebody who commented on a post about outbound tooling last week is a different prospect from somebody who merely matches the firmographics, and no database carries that signal.

Pick the post before you pick the tool

The quality of this list is decided entirely by the post you choose, not by the extraction. A competitor announcing a feature, an analyst posting about the problem you solve, a customer complaining about the tool you replace. Reactions tell you interest. Comments tell you more, because writing a sentence takes effort.

  • A competitor launch post: everyone reacting is in market for that category right now.
  • A complaint about an incumbent tool: the comments are a switching list.
  • A hiring or funding announcement from a target account: the reactors are usually employees, which gets you names.
  • Your own best performing post: the people who engaged and never replied.

From engagement to a list you can send to

  1. 1

    Paste the post URL

One post at a time. Use the full URL to the post itself, not to the author profile.

  2. 2

    Choose reactions, comments, or both

Both, on the first run. You can filter to commenters later, and you cannot go back and get them without paying again.

  3. 3

Extract, and expect people rather than companies

This builder returns profiles. You get names and LinkedIn URLs, and the company comes off the profile rather than from a company search.

  4. 4

Filter to the ones who match the ICP before enriching

A viral post returns a lot of students, jobseekers and competitors. Cut those before you spend an email credit on them, exactly as course 1.2 taught.

  5. 5

    Then get the email

Professional Email on the survivors only. This is the same discipline as everywhere else: filter first, enrich second.

Half the list is irrelevant

What you see
Students, recruiters and competitors in the rows
The fix
Normal for a post that travelled. Filter on title and company before enriching, never after.

Very few rows come back

What you see
A post with visible engagement returns little
The fix
Reactions on old posts can be partly withheld. Prefer posts from the last few weeks.

The outreach reads as creepy

What you see
Replies asking how you found them
The fix
Name the post in the first line. Referencing a public comment is normal, pretending you found them another way is not.

1.What decides the quality of a list built from post engagement?

2.Half your rows are students and recruiters. What is the fix?

3.Why should the outreach name the post?

Answer all 3, then open Schedule a column, schedule a builder, and get notified to tick this lesson off.

Try it yourself

Pull the audience behind one relevant post, filter to people who match your ICP, and write an opener that names the post.

You have done it when
Every surviving row has a reason to be contacted that you could say out loud to the person.
Credit budget
One post. Filter hard before enriching.
