Lesson 2.4.1
Where the companies nobody has indexed actually live
What this costs
Free. Finding sources, not running them.
Before you start
A market you have failed to find in a database.
Every market keeps a list of itself somewhere. Databases index the markets where that list is easy to buy, which is why coverage collapses the moment you leave large English speaking software. The skill is knowing where the list lives instead.
Six places a market keeps a list of itself
| Source | Why it exists | What it gives you for free |
|---|---|---|
| Trade association members | Companies pay to be listed | Membership tier, category, sometimes headcount band |
| Certification and licence registers | Regulation requires it | The certification itself, which is a qualifying fact |
| Event exhibitor and sponsor lists | The organiser sells the listing | Stand size and sponsorship tier, a direct budget proxy |
| Tender and permit portals | Public procurement rules | Project value, timing and the parties involved |
| Review platforms | Customers write them | Volume, recency and sentiment about a real product |
| Job boards | Companies advertise intent | What they are building, and therefore what they are about to buy |
The question to ask about any market
- Who takes their money apart from customers? That organisation keeps a member list.
- What are they required to prove? Whoever certifies it publishes a register.
- Where do they go to be seen? That event publishes an exhibitor list.
- What do they have to announce? Tenders, permits, funding, hiring.
- Who writes about them? Review sites, trade press, local directories.
This also works in languages and markets no database covers, which is where the gap is widest. A national trade body directory in a language a US vendor never indexed is a list your competitors literally cannot buy.
