Short answer: The right sponsors sell to your visitors but don't need a booth: banks, insurers, law and consulting firms, software vendors, logistics providers, investment promotion agencies and media. Find them by reverse-engineering who sponsors adjacent events (at what tier, for how many years), add companies with fresh regional budgets, and pitch the sponsorship owner rather than the marketing inbox.

Why sponsors are found differently from exhibitors

Exhibitors need to show a product. Sponsors buy an audience and a position. Sponsorship decisions are made by marketing, partnerships or brand teams with an annual budget line, and the strongest predictor that a company will sponsor you is that it already sponsors events like yours. The list to build is the serial sponsors in your vertical.

The method

Step 1 — Define sponsor categories, not names

Category exclusivity is the product. List the categories that want your visitors: banking and payments, insurance, legal, consulting, software, logistics, real estate and free zones, government investment promotion, media, travel. For each, note what they would buy: title, category partner, lounge, stage, hosted-buyer program, event app.

Step 2 — Reverse-engineer adjacent events

For ten to twenty adjacent events (competitors, regional editions, other verticals with the same visitor profile), capture the sponsors, their tier and the number of consecutive editions. Archived event pages recover past editions. Serial sponsors, meaning three or more events a year in your space, are priority one: the budget line exists and the owner exists.

Step 3 — Add budget signals

  • Regional expansion: a new office in your city, a new license, a new regional head (press releases, appointments).
  • Advertisers in your vertical's trade press and newsletters.
  • Recently funded companies targeting your region.
  • Government and quasi-government bodies: ministries, chambers, free zones, investment promotion agencies. In the Middle East and Asia they are often co-organizers or title sponsors.
  • Exhibitors with the largest booths at adjacent shows: upgrade candidates.

Step 4 — Qualify

Audience overlap (their customers are your visitors), regional priority, budget-cycle timing, sponsorship history and tiers, whether category exclusivity is still available, conflict with existing sponsors, brand fit.

Step 5 — Find the sponsorship owner

Head of marketing, events, partnerships or brand; for banks and law firms often a regional marketing lead; for government bodies, the trade or investment promotion desk. Verify with a short call ("who handles event partnerships?") before pitching.

Step 6 — Pitch with their history

"You were platinum at X and Y; our visitor base adds Z" (country split, seniority, hosted buyers). Offer category exclusivity and a tier consistent with what they have bought before.

Step 7 — Keep the sponsor map

Track sponsorship moves across adjacent events every season. A sponsor that dropped a competitor is your call next quarter.

Common mistakes

  • Pitching exhibitors as sponsors with the same deck.
  • Chasing global brands with fixed sponsorship calendars instead of regional challengers who need visibility.
  • Ignoring institutional sponsors.
  • Emailing marketing@.
  • Pitching in the middle of their budget cycle.

FAQ

How much lead time do sponsors need? Six to twelve months, aligned with their fiscal year. Title sponsors often decide a full cycle ahead.

Can exhibitors also be sponsors? Yes. Start with the largest booths at adjacent shows, but pitch a different buyer with a different deck.

Where do I find who sponsored past editions? Archived event pages, post-show reports and press coverage of the event.
